What would you prefer for a personal AI agent?
WTF is an AI agent? An AI agent can work through a task using tools or apps you give it access to. For example, you could ask it to read selected emails and prepare replies for your review.

On November 1, a user asked Elon Musk if Grok Bot's weekly usage could be reset. Musk replied that the cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue. He did not provide cost figures or announce a price increase. Report
Meanwhile, Meta offers its personal agent Muse free for many uses, with paid plans for more. Both Muse and Grok Bot come with a cloud computer where the agent can work. Meta · Grok Bot
My take: A ready-to-use agent can be worth paying for. If its price or limits stop working for you, an open-source alternative should be a practical choice too.

⭐Today's Shortcut
Before you upgrade, pick one job you want your agent to do regularly. For example: prepare drafts for five customer emails each week. Compare your options using that same job.
Check a free plan: If one is available where you live, see whether it can use the apps you need and finish the job within its limits. Meta says Muse is still in limited testing. Meta
Check a paid plan: As of November 2, xAI lists Grok Bot in its US$30-per-month Premium plan, before taxes and fees. Its weekly usage pool is shared with eligible Grok and Cursor activity. The plan includes other services too. xAI pricing · Usage limits
Price the alternative: For a local setup, count hardware, electricity and setup time. A cloud model or rented server can add charges. Check whether the alternative can do the same job well enough before you switch.
What your subscription buys
A model and a computer: Grok Bot has a cloud computer with a browser and files. Bots on your account share it and can keep working when your laptop is closed. Grok Bot documentation
Someone else handling the setup: A ready-to-use service puts the model, computer and interface together. You're paying for the AI and for someone to run and maintain those pieces.
What if the economics change?
Prices are one lever. A company could charge more, offer less included usage or improve efficiency. Grok already sells extra usage through top-ups. None of this confirms a future price increase. xAI usage limits
The same subscription could buy less work. In a hypothetical example, if $30 covered 100 similar tasks and later covered 60, the average would rise from 30 cents to 50 cents per task. Those are example numbers, not Grok's limits.
Free still has a cost. Meta provides the computer for Muse's free tier. We don't know whether Muse is losing money or what Meta might charge in the future.

Can open-source agents do it for less?
Local shifts the work to your computer. You may avoid per-use cloud model fees, but you need suitable hardware. For a task to run while you sleep, your machine needs to be on, or you need an always-on machine or hosted service. Results can vary by model and task.
Setup is getting easier. Hermes says its desktop app helps users download a model that fits their hardware. You still need to see whether it can do your job. Time, hardware and willingness to maintain the setup all count. Hermes local model guide
If a free plan does your job, keep using it. If it doesn't, compare the price of a managed service with the time and cost of running your own. A good open alternative gives you that choice without turning setup into a second job.
