Should an AI watermark count as proof that someone cheated?

WTF is a text watermark?: It is a hidden statistical pattern added while an AI chooses its next words. You cannot spot it by reading one sentence. A detector with the right secret key checks a longer passage for word choices that appear more often than chance.

You ask Claude to write an email, copy the answer into Gmail and send it.

There is no Claude logo, strange font or invisible character attached to it. Still, Anthropic says supported Claude models can leave an imperceptible watermark inside the wording itself.

My first thought was simple:

What if I ask another AI to rewrite it?

That may weaken the signal. A model that does not add a watermark avoids it altogether.

That makes the system sound pointless. Its job is smaller than permanent tracking.

โญToday's Shortcut

Treat a watermark result as evidence that a supported model processed the wording.

It cannot tell you who supplied the ideas, how much a human changed or whether using AI broke any rule.

The mark is made while the model writes

An AI usually has several reasonable options for its next word.

Imagine the next word could be:

important, serious, significant or useful.

A basic watermarking system uses the previous text and a secret key to split possible next tokens into hidden groups. One group gets a tiny preference.

Every choice sounds normal. Across hundreds of words, the preferred group appears slightly more often than chance would predict.

A detector with the same key can recreate those hidden groups and measure the pattern.

This is the simple method described in the influential KGW watermark paper. It explains the idea, not Claude's exact implementation. Anthropic has announced embedded watermarks but has not published the full algorithm.

Copying preserves the choices

Copying Claude's answer into Gmail, Google Docs or X keeps the same word sequence, so the statistical signal travels with it.

Removing formatting will not help because this is not a font trick or a zero-width character.

A serious paraphrase changes the sequence. Another model may choose different words, reorder sentences and rebuild the passage. Enough change can push the signal below the detector's threshold.

Watermarks in the Sand demonstrated this weakness against three published schemes. Under the paper's assumptions, the researchers removed their watermarks with only minor quality loss.

A tool claiming to remove Claude's mark still cannot prove it reliably until it can test against Anthropic's detector. Public detection tools are still being developed.

Why add it if people can remove it?

Ordinary users copy, make a few edits and publish. A platform can use that signal to find large volumes of mostly untouched AI text even when a determined person can escape it.

The coverage is limited to participating providers. A Claude watermark detector cannot identify unmarked text from another model.

The EU is trying to widen that participation. Its Article 50 transparency rules took effect on 2 August 2026 and require providers to make AI-generated text, images, audio and video machine-readable and detectable using methods that are robust as far as technically feasible.

The law asks for practical marking, not mathematical permanence.

Google's SynthID-Text study covered nearly 20 million Gemini responses and found no significant change in user feedback about text quality. A watermark can run quietly at product scale without being impossible to remove.

Three different signals

A text watermark asks: Did a participating model place its secret signal in these word choices?

An AI detector asks: Does this writing statistically resemble AI-generated text?

C2PA metadata asks: Does this file carry a signed record of where it came from and whether it was changed?

Anthropic says Claude will use text watermarks alongside C2PA provenance metadata for supported files such as PNG, JPG and SVG.

An AI detector guesses without the model cooperating and can produce false positives. A watermark detector checks for a signal deliberately inserted by the provider. C2PA follows a file, but its manifest can be removed.

None of the three can decide whether a person cheated.

A mark is not a verdict

Suppose you write an article yourself and ask Claude to clean the grammar. The processed text may carry Claude's mark even though the ideas and first draft were yours.

Now reverse it. Suppose Claude writes the first draft and you rewrite every paragraph carefully. The mark may disappear even though AI did most of the early work.

A watermark answers one narrow question:

Did a supported Claude model likely shape these words?

It cannot tell us who had the idea, how much a person rewrote, or whether using AI broke any rule.

It may help platforms measure untouched AI content at scale.

But it should never be enough to accuse one student, employee or writer.

A watermark can trace wording. It cannot prove authorship.
