
When does AI content become slop?
WTF is AI slop?: AI slop is AI-generated content that looks finished but lacks substance, judgment or care. It is polished enough to publish and cheap enough to repeat. The problem begins when nobody reviews it, improves it or takes responsibility for it.
Post an AI image and someone will call it slop.
Mention ChatGPT in your writing process and the same word appears. Use an AI-generated film shot and the discussion moves away from the shot itself.
The word is being stretched until it means "AI touched this."
That definition will become useless. AI is entering writing, design, music, video and software. We still have to judge what was made and how carelessly it was published.
My definition is simple:
AI slop is output published before a human has done the thinking the audience expects.

Why we needed the word
Developer and writer Simon Willison helped popularize "slop" in 2024. His complaint was specific: people were generating and publishing unreviewed AI content.
Review belongs inside the definition.
Why Slop Matters, a 2025 research paper, describes three common features:
It looks competent on the surface but has little underneath.
It takes far less effort to produce than the work it imitates.
It can be produced and distributed at enormous scale.
Think of a clean report with invented facts, a beautiful poster with meaningless copy or a video assembled from unrelated AI clips. Each resembles finished work until somebody pays attention.
Effort alone cannot save it
Spending three hours prompting does not make the result thoughtful.
You can regenerate the same poster fifty times without deciding who it is for, what it should communicate or why one version is better. That is activity, not judgment.
A designer can use the same model differently. They choose references, write the copy, decide the visual hierarchy, reject weak generations, correct details and test the poster at its final size.
AI may have generated most of the pixels. The designer still directed the work.
Taste is the missing layer
Taste can sound like a fancy word for beauty. It is more practical.
Taste notices that the opening sounds generic. The logo is too large. The camera movement does not fit the scene. A claim has no proof. A sentence is polished but says nothing.
The model will happily continue.
A person with taste stops it.
This also explains why AI can improve work and make the internet feel more repetitive at the same time.
A Science Advances study found that access to AI-generated ideas helped some participants write stories judged as more creative, enjoyable and well-written. But the AI-assisted stories also became more similar to each other.
The model raised the floor. Human judgment still had to create distance from the average.
The five-question slop test
Ask these before you publish:
1. What is this trying to do?
"Make content" is not an answer. Name the person, decision or feeling the work is meant to affect.
2. What is underneath the polish?
Check whether the piece contains an actual observation, argument, story or useful detail.
3. What did I reject or change?
If the first acceptable output became the final output, you probably skipped the judgment stage.
4. What did I verify?
Check names, numbers, quotes, links, anatomy, text inside images and anything else the model can confidently get wrong.
5. Will I take responsibility for it?
Imagine the AI label is visible beside your name. Would you still publish the work exactly as it is?
Slop steals time from somebody else
Bad AI output can save its creator time while creating more work for everyone receiving it.
BetterUp and Stanford's survey of 1,150 US workers called this "workslop": AI-generated work that looks useful but leaves colleagues to find the missing context, correct mistakes and redo the thinking. Respondents reported spending an average of two hours resolving each incident.
That number comes from a survey, so it is not a universal measurement. The behavior is still easy to recognize.
Slop moves effort downstream.
