On Saturday, a humanoid robot called Tiangong Ultra ran 100 metres in 9.39 seconds.

Usain Bolt's human world record is 9.58 seconds.

So yes, the robot crossed the same distance faster.

That does not replace Bolt's record. It was a different category, under different rules. but the improvement is wild.

The winning robot at the 2025 Games took 21.50 seconds. One year later, the number is 9.39.

China's robot games are public stress tests with a stadium around them.

A sprint tests balance, motors, joints and power delivery.

Football tests vision, decision-making and coordination.

Table tennis tests reaction speed and precision.

Combat tests whether a robot can stay upright when the world stops behaving predictably.

The medal is useful. The data from every fall, missed kick and failed task is more useful.

The 2026 Games brought together 2,056 robots from 666 teams for 51 events and 1,301 competition sessions.

In 2025, the event had 26 events and 280 teams.

The sports attract attention. The scenario events show the commercial plan.

Robots folded clothes, handled hotel work, responded to fires, picked beans, tightened screws and completed tasks in model homes, factories and shops.

Potential buyers from factories, hotels and other industries were invited to watch.

That makes the Games part competition, part laboratory and part showroom.

A company can test a robot in public, see where it fails, compare it with competitors and meet the customer who might deploy it.

China is building the whole loop in one place.

India is not operating at China's humanoid scale yet.

The International Federation of Robotics reported that China installed 295,000 industrial robots in 2024. India installed 9,100. These are industrial robots, not humanoids, but the difference shows the size of the manufacturing base behind the demos.

Kerala's robotics companies operate at a smaller and more specialised scale.

Kochi-based iHub Robotics has built TARA, a wheeled semi-humanoid service robot.

Genrobotics' Bandicoot is already used by Kerala Water Authority to clean sewer manholes without sending a person inside.

Sastra Robotics builds machines that physically test devices such as phones and touchscreens.

These robots do not make a Bolt-sized headline. They solve a defined job.

India's February 2026 robotics policy discussion also shows where we are institutionally: the country is still working toward a dedicated robotics mission, common standards, incentives and lower dependence on imported components.

China is already running a national-scale competition around the stack it has built.

One sprint proves speed.

It does not prove that a humanoid can work safely for eight hours, recover from mistakes, use its hands reliably and make economic sense.

Those are harder tests than beating a stopwatch.

The Beijing Games matter because they are adding more of them. Scenario events increased from six in 2025 to 21 in 2026.

The spectacle is slowly becoming a deployment test.
