Which scam has reached your family recently?
WTF changed with AI scams?: Old scam messages were easier to laugh at because bad English, strange spacing, and random-looking links gave them away. That shortcut is weak now.
AI can clean the language, write in Indian English or local languages, and help scammers create fake websites faster.
A scam message can look normal and still be a scam.
Your mom gets one of these at 4:18 pm:
"Your parcel could not be delivered. Pay Rs 10 to update address."
"Your electricity bill is pending. Power will disconnect tonight."
"TRAI notice: your mobile number will be blocked in 2 hours."
"CBI verification required. Join video call now."
She does not need a cyber security course at that moment.
She needs a tiny rule she can remember while panicking.
The Wall Street Journal reported that scammers are using AI to create more convincing text-message scams and fake sites. Times of India reported on Google's lawsuit against a group accused of using Gemini to create over 9,000 fake websites and send around 2.5 million scam messages.
For India, the danger is extra practical because the final step is often UPI, OTP, APK install, or a WhatsApp call.

⭐Today's Shortcut
Send this line to your family group:
"Before you click, pay, install, share OTP, enter UPI PIN, or join a police/bank video call, send a screenshot here first."
The screenshot creates delay.
Scammers write the message to make her act before she thinks.
The mom rule
Use this exact sentence:
"I will check in the official app and call back."
Then cut the call.
That line works for bank calls, courier calls, electricity calls, SIM calls, and fake police calls.
Do not let her argue with the caller.
Scammers are trained for arguments.
They are bad at waiting when the victim says, "I will check and call back."
1. Link check
Rule:
Do not open links from SMS or WhatsApp for payments, KYC, delivery, or verification.
Use the real app.
Parcel issue: open Amazon, Flipkart, Delhivery, Blue Dart, India Post, or the courier site yourself.
Bank KYC: open the bank app yourself.
Electricity bill: open the electricity board app or official site.
Traffic fine: use the official challan portal.
If the message says "only this link works", that is a red flag.
2. UPI check
Teach this until it becomes automatic:
UPI PIN is used when money leaves your account.
Receiving money does not need UPI PIN.
Scam example:
"Refund Rs 2,499. Accept request and enter PIN."
What is really happening:
They sent a collect request. If she enters the PIN, she pays them.
Family line:
"If any refund asks for UPI PIN, reject it."
3. OTP, CVV, and screen share check
No real support person needs these:
OTP
UPI PIN
CVV
full card number
screen share
AnyDesk / remote access
Screen sharing is especially dangerous because the scammer can see OTPs, bank apps, and notifications.
If someone says "share screen so I can help", the call is over.
4. APK check
This is the Android rule:
No APK from WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, or random links.
Scammers package malware as normal family stuff:
wedding invitation
e-challan
bank KYC app
courier tracking app
electricity bill app
loan approval app
subsidy form
If the phone asks to "allow install from unknown sources", stop.
Apps come from Play Store or App Store.
5. Panic check
Scams usually contain a deadline.
"SIM will close today."
"Electricity will disconnect tonight."
"Aadhaar used in crime."
"Parcel has drugs."
"Bank account will freeze."
"You are under digital arrest."
The boring move is the safe move: cut the call, call one family member, then open the official app or site.
For digital arrest, remember this line:
There is no WhatsApp video-call arrest where the case disappears after payment.
6. Family screenshot rule
Make a simple family group habit.
Any strange payment message goes to the group first.
Use this format:
Scam check:
1. Who sent it?
2. What are they asking me to do?
3. Is money, OTP, UPI PIN, APK, or screen share involved?Even a two-minute delay can save money.
Scammers hate delay because panic is their engine.
India reporting
If no money is lost, but the call, SMS, or WhatsApp looks suspicious:
Report it on Chakshu inside Sanchar Saathi:
Sanchar Saathi’s Chakshu is for suspected fraud communication through call, SMS, and WhatsApp. The portal lists examples like DoT/TRAI impersonation, police or government impersonation, KYC, bank payments, electricity, gas, insurance, investment, and trading scams.
If money is lost:
Call 1930 quickly.
Then report it on:
Do not wait until evening. Fast reporting may help freeze the money trail
Now go and make your family safe.
