OpenAI staff found an audio recorder behind a television in an executive conference room in San Francisco. It was plugged into a USB port and concealed in toilet paper.
The room hosted confidential discussions. According to the complaint, OpenAI determined that the device had been installed around September 28. DOJ
A place where people discussed advanced AI had a very physical problem: someone might be listening from behind the TV.

Let's dive in.
The clues around the room

The investigation focused on OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan.
On October 5, a camera allegedly captured him entering the room and looking behind the television.
That day, security personnel found an unattended bag containing his identification and a second similar recorder, according to the complaint.
He was arrested on October 9 and appeared in court on October 13, charged with intercepting or attempting to intercept oral communications. The allegations have not been proven in court. DOJ
AI appears on both sides of the story
Prosecutors describe prompts about building and concealing a recorder from a chatbot account associated with Alfozan's spouse that shared identifiers with his account. Some included details specific to the device found at OpenAI. DOJ
Those are investigators' allegations. They do not establish that a chatbot understood an illegal plan or knowingly helped with one.
OpenAI, meanwhile, says its models helped it understand the device, trace its origin, and identify the employee who had planted it. The company referred the matter to the FBI and fired him. AP
That is an interesting role for AI, but the public account leaves the process unclear. We do not have enough detail to say which model did what, or how much of the identification depended on human investigators and the other evidence.
What we still don't know
OpenAI says it has found no indication that the employee improperly accessed or took model weights, source code, or customer data. AP reports that the complaint does not explain what he intended to do with any captured conversations. AP
The FBI investigation is ongoing. DOJ
For now, the story has an unusual overlap: chatbot activity appears among the alleged clues, while OpenAI says AI helped investigate the hardware.
The recorder behind the television is the part investigators can point to. How much AI contributed to finding the person behind it remains a question.
