WTF is Laya?: An open-source decision model that returns choices, scores and probabilities. It works in the same broad category as Jev, with downloadable weights and code developers can adapt.

We recently covered Jev. Now there is an open-source alternative getting attention, and the person behind it is a Malayali.

The model is Laya. Its creator is Nandakishor M,

He teaches generative AI through Instagram.

Developers are discussing Laya on Reddit and experimenting with their own implementations. Launch discussion

I may be a little biased because he is also a Malayali, but this is a proud moment for us. And the model itself gives us plenty to talk about..

I am Alex. Welcome to ShortCu8 by Innov8.

Lets Dive Deep🐰🐰.

⭐Today's Shortcut

If Jev caught your interest, Laya gives you an open model to download, inspect and adapt.

For builders who want control over how a decision model runs, that is a good reason to take a closer look.

The story started before Laya went around our feeds

Nandakishor had already published related research in 2025. One paper explored predicting whether a sales conversation would lead to a purchase. Another looked at deciding when an AI should seek more help before answering. March paper, September paper

When Jev launched, he recognised ideas connected to work he had been doing.

In his own account, he says it was frustrating to see the attention around Jev while his earlier work had received little recognition. He used that experience to build a broader model and release it openly. His story

The earlier research led towards today's Laya. It doesn't mean the exact same model was sitting there a year ago.

What Laya does, in a simple example

Imagine a company receives hundreds of customer messages.

Some are about payments. Some are about delivery. A few need urgent attention.

Laya can help sort those messages and give each one an urgency score. Another person or system can then handle the reply. The project supports these kinds of choices and scores directly. Model details

It is a specific job, but an easy one to understand. Getting messages to the right place is useful even before anyone writes an answer.

Why I'm interested in Laya over Jev

The biggest reason is that Laya is open-source. Others can download it, study how it works and adapt it. Jev's compared release is available through a hosted service without a downloadable model. Laya, Jev

Laya also reports higher scores on several tests, including sorting news by topic and recognising emotion in text.

Those results come from different test setups, so they don't establish that Laya wins overall. Jev leads on some tasks too. Published comparison

Still, an open alternative with promising results is worth getting excited about. Another developer has already shared a version aimed at running Laya faster on local computers. Community project

That is what makes the open release interesting: people can take Nandakishor's work further.

For us, there is a familiar name and place behind this AI story.

Nandakishor M built Laya, released it openly, and now other people are picking it up.

Congratulations, Nandakishor.

Now you guys go and build something ❤️
